Study Abroad Research Program (SARP)
Next Steps Program
The Next Steps Program is co-sponsored by the International Studies Program and the Center for Global Engagement. Next Steps is focused on students who have returned from study abroad programs with an interest in conducting independent research abroad, are looking for engagement projects to undertake, or are interested in applying for Honors Programs, Fellowships, and Undergraduate Research Grants.
Students will:
- learn about funding opportunities for undergraduate projects,
- learn how to write a successful grant application and refine your grant writing skills,
- find out about internship and volunteer opportunities with NGO’s and International Development Organizations
- connect with faculty at Northwestern to help support your future research initiatives
The Next Steps Program will run January 26, 2009-January 27, 2009. Both workshops will be held in the lower level of the Transportaion Center. 600 N. Foster (corner of Foster and Sheridan)
To RSVP for this event please contact Bianca Ramirez at b-ramirez@northwestern.edu
SARP
Initiated in Spring Quarter 2002, SARP is a small, elite pre-departure program for outbound study abroad students that focuses on study abroad research. This makes it especially appealing to International Studies Majors. The primary goal of the program is to encourage and prepare students to do research abroad that they can develop into a senior honors thesis, independent study, fellowship, graduate school application essay, or postgraduate work when they return. The program also gives students tools for thinking more deeply about cross-cultural learning and foreign cultures.
SARP reflects the Study Abroad Office’s goal of developing stronger connections between students’ study abroad experiences and their academic work on campus. It is also a clear reflection of the Provost and President’s directive to encourage more research projects among undergraduates.
Students who are selected to participate in SARP are required to attend seven workshops and to identify and do preparatory work with one or two faculty advisers before they go abroad. Workshops focus primarily on helping students identify a research question and develop a proposal, following the guidelines of Northwestern’s Undergraduate Research Grants.
If you are interested in applying to this program for Spring Quarter 2010 please contact Bianca Ramirez at b-ramirez@northwestern.edu.
This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in doing research abroad and we strongly encourage IS majors to apply.
